March 2026The North Pasture

The Quickening of the Soil

The first frost settled quietly over the north pasture, leaving a silver glaze upon the rye and signaling spring’s return to the hands that steward it.

First frost over the pasture at daybreak

At dawn, the frost arrived as a soft sheen over the north pasture. The rye lay still beneath a fine silver lattice, each blade carrying the brief clarity of winter before the sun would ask it to let go.

By midmorning, warmth returned to the slope, and with it the practical rhythm of the ranch: gates checked, irrigation lines tested, and beds prepared for the first measured sowing of the season.

This transition is always subtle before it becomes obvious. The soil loosens in tone, the wind shifts in scent, and the work moves from waiting to intention.
